Editorial Policies

Cauldrons and Broomsticks is a Pagan publication dedicated to exploring alternative religions and nature-based spirituality. We seek material that will appeal to a diverse, intelligent, well-read audience.

Popular topics include the seasons and their respective festivals/holy days, mythology as it applies to modern or ancient Paganism, history of Pagan religions and cultures, Pagan events, ritual and invocational material, Pagan deities, personal experiences with the Divine, theory/science of magic, helpful hints, familiars and animal spirits, plants and plant spirits, astronomy and astrology as they relate to ritual or spellcasting, community outreach and volunteer efforts by Pagans, parenting/family life, and Pagan worldviews.

We reserve the right to edit manuscripts for clarity and content. However, we will endeavor at all times to maintain the integrity of your message and will consult you on changes.

We may ask you to verify facts or conclusions; we may make suggestions for improvements. Remember, editors help writers to express themselves more clearly.

You may write "Do Not Edit" on your work and we will respect that, but it greatly reduces your chances of publication. Never send us (or any other publisher) your only copy of anything. Send original artwork only if requested.

Payment

C & B is a free publication which does not generate any revenues; therefore, no remuneration is offered at this time.

Terms

We do not accept simultaneous submissions (submissions offered to two magazines simultaneously) unless previously approved.

We may consider reprints of particularly fine work, but query first and make sure you do have the reprint rights to offer.

We prefer to receive First World Serial Rights and we ask contributors not to reprint work published in Cauldrons and Broomsticks for one year unless agreed upon by Cauldrons and Broomsticks.

Articles

Short articles range from 150 to 2,000 words.

Feature articles range from 2,000 to 3,500 words. Query first before submitting feature-length articles.

We print more short articles than feature articles, so you have a better chance of acceptance with shorter manuscripts.

In your cover letter, give the approximate word count.

Columns

We have some regular columnists booked already, but we still need more. We would like to run columns of varying length in each issue, from short ones around 500 words to major ones up to 3,500.

Query us with one or more column proposals and include your credentials; convince us why you are the best person to write this column. You may use personal experience, formal education, previous publication credits, affiliation with recognized Pagan organizations, etc.

If we accept, we will decide with you on an appropriate length for your column, and each installment should fit that length.

In general we expect a higher level of skill, experience, and scholarship in columns than we do in unsolicited material.

Fiction

We are currently looking for pagan fiction. In your cover letter, place the word "Fiction" and give the approximate word count.

Poetry

You may submit up to five poems at a time.

Shorter poems generally work better than lengthy ones.

Ritual and Invocational Material

Descriptions of successful or unsuccessful rituals in which you took part, or scripts for rituals which our readers might like to try, may range from 250 to 1,000 words. Prose invocations may be up to 150 words.

Query before sending anything longer, but we may allow more space for exceptional material.

We welcome accounts from all Pagan or related belief systems. Show us the special sparkle in your religion.

No-No's

Desperate rhymes, flat or cliche'd descriptions, awkward writing, attacks on other persons or religions, botched or inadequate research, plagiarism, material submitted with no regard to our guidelines, errors in fact, personal experience or fabrication passed off as historical fact, arrogance or other obnoxious attitudes, groveling or self-effacement, wandering from the point, beating a dead horse or preaching to the converted, proselytizing.
